Day One supports a Trash for deleted entries on iOS, Mac, and Android. Trash is not yet available on the Web or Windows apps. The Trash is located below the list of journals in the Journal Drawer/Sidebar, and it will only display if there is one or more deleted entries.

Note that this feature doesn’t support restoring deleted journals. If you have accidentally deleted a journal, do reach out to support and provide these details so we can work with you to restore the data:

  • The approximate number of entries in the deleted journal
  • The estimated creation date of the deleted journal.

Restore deleted entries

Open the journal drawer/sidebar and go to Trash near the bottom. Tap an entry and then tap Restore. The entry will go back to the journal in which it originally existed.

Swipe from right to left on an entry for additional options including Select which allows selecting multiple entries to restore simultaneously.

On macOS, select the entry and click the Restore button at the top.

Permanently delete entries

In the Trash, entries can be permanently deleted as well. To permanently delete entries, open the Trash and click/tap the delete button/link as shown:

Important: Once an entry is permanently deleted from the Trash, it is irreversibly removed and cannot be recovered by the app or by our support team. There is no recovery option for permanently deleted entries.

We recommend leaving entries in the Trash as a safety net and only permanently deleting entries if you are completely sure you no longer need them.

If you have lost your encryption key you will need to create a new account to get a new key. Only one key can be generated per account. Day One does not save a copy of your key, so if you do not keep a copy, there is no way to recover it. (While we don’t have a copy of your key, we do keep a record when you save your key, so if you provide us with your user ID, we can check whether you have previously saved your key and point you in the right direction to find it.)

Note: Creating a new account and encryption key should only be done as a last resort if you are unable to find your lost encryption key. You won’t be able to use the new key to access any entries encrypted with the old key.

The following steps will let you obtain a new key through creating a new Day One account.

One thing to note is that the account deletion process can take up to 5 days (see step 8). This means if you want to reuse your same email, we recommend switching your email on the account to something else before deleting it, or waiting 5 days to make a new account.

Please follow the steps carefully. Please contact support if you have any questions about this process.

iOS

  1. Export all data as a JSON file. Save it to the Files on your device. It is important you keep this copy of your data secure during this process
  2. Sign out of Sync in the Day One app on all devices. Sign In/Sign Out.
  3. Head to Day One> Settings> Account> Advanced> Delete account.
  4. Go to Day One > Settings > Sign In. Choose an option to create a new account or create a new account at https://dayone.me/signup. The account deletion process from step 6 takes up to 5 days to prevent accidental deletion. A different email or alias will need to be used in order to create a new account immediately. After 5 days, you can update the account to use the former email address by signing into the Web app.
  5. Sign in to Day One Sync on all devices using the option chosen in step 4. Sign In/Sign Out
  6. Check that you see Premium in Settings> Account. You may need to restore purchases if the appropriate account status is not reflected automatically.
  7. Import the JSON file export from step 1. Tap Settings Import/Export> Import Day One JSON
  8. Please save your new encryption key in a secure location. You can locate the encryption key in Settings> Sync > View Encryption Key

Android

  1. Export all data as a JSON file. This will give you a copy for safe keeping
  2. Sign out of Sync in the Day One app on all devices. Sign In/Sign Out.
  3. Close the app and leave closed until directed to re-open later in these steps. Do not uninstall Day One.
  4. Sign in to https://dayone.me/settings in a web browser. There are more than one way to sign in to an account. Be sure to use the option associated with your account.
  5. Scroll down and click Delete Account
  6. Open Day One on the primary device.
  7. Go to Day One > Settings > Sign In. Choose an option to create a new account or create a new account at https://dayone.me/signup. 8. Sign in to Day One Sync on all devices using the option chosen in step 7. Sign In/Sign Out
  9. You may need to restore purchases if the appropriate account status is not reflected automatically.
  10. Data will begin syncing and you can locate the encryption key in the following places:
    • iOS app: Settings (gear icon) > Sync > View Encryption Key
    • macOS desktop app: “Day One” on the Mac’s menu bar > Settings> Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key

Recovering Entries after iCloud Data Loss in Day One Classic https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-classic/recovering-entries-after-icloud-data-loss/ Wed, 29 Dec 2021 12:21:27 +0000 https://dayoneapp-development.mystagingwebsite.com/blog/recovering-entries-after-icloud-data-loss/ Recovering Entries after iCloud Data Loss in Day One Classic

The post Recovering Entries after iCloud Data Loss in Day One Classic appeared first on Day One | Your Journal for Life.

]]>
This is for the oldest version of Day One, Day One Classic. For issues with the current app, you can refer to our sync troubleshooting steps found here

Confirming iCloud Data Loss

As part of Apple’s migration from iCloud to iCloud Drive, there tends to be a bit of a delay in seeing your entries reappear in Day One.

To confirm whether or not your entries are still in iCloud, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > Day One
  2. To the far right of Documents & Data, you should see the amount of data (in MB) stored on your device. Depending upon your journal size and the amount of photographic entries you have, this should be 50 MB or higher, and is a pretty good indication that your data has not been permanently lost, but is just not appearing in Day One (yet).
  3. Tap Journal_dayone.
  4. Tap entries (or photos), then you should see the filenames of your entries (or photos) listed.

If it looks like your data is still available in iCloud, it is likely there is a delay in getting your data to reappear in Day One. You should see something at the top of the Main Menu in Day One that shows entries/photos/data are downloading. If you don’t see this, or it appears to be frozen, toggle iCloud syncing off/on in Day One, reboot your device, then come back to Day One. You should see something that indicates entries are downloading. It will take some time, but they will come back eventually. Ideally, keep Day One open and active as the entries download.

Data Recovery Options

If data loss occurred, there are several options available for restoring your data. In descending order of preference, these options include:

  1. Day One Mac Automatic Journal Backups
  2. Mac OS X Time Machine Backups
  3. iTunes File Sharing Backups

A. Day One Mac Automatic Journal Backups

Data available: Text and Photos

The Mac version of Day One automatically backs up your entire journal at specified intervals when your Mac is opened. If you don’t open your Mac app periodically, your journal will not be backed up. The default setting for backups is every two days with a maximum of 20 backups stored at any time. These default settings can be changed in Day One Mac > Preferences > Backup.

For more information on restoring entries using this method, see: How do I restore from a backup?

B. Mac OS X Time Machine Backups

Data available: Text and Photos

If you have Time Machine backups and use the same iCloud account on all your devices, you may be able to find some of your entries using a Time Machine backup. Note that this applies even if you only have Day One on a mobile device, but your computer is a Mac; it’s not necessary to have the Mac version of Day One.

Follow these steps:

Finding Journal Data in Time Machine

  1. Open Finder, and paste this path into Go > Go to Folder: ~/Library/Mobile Documents/5U8NS4GX82~com~dayoneapp~dayone/Documents/Journal_dayone Tap the Go button.
  2. Click the Time Machine icon in the menubar, then click ‘Enter Time Machine.’
  3. Choose a past date in Time Machine that you think should have a copy of your missing content.
  4. Control-click the “entries” folder inside the “Journal_dayone” folder, then click “Get Info” to view details of this folder.
  5. In the folder details window, find the number of items in the folder.
  6. If the number of items matches the number of entries in your journal prior to data loss, copy the “entries” and “photos” folders to your current Mac Desktop.
  7. If the number of items seems wrong, repeat steps 3-6 until you find a suitable backup.

For more information about Time Machine, see: Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac

C. iTunes File Sharing Backups

Data available: Text only

A Mac computer is required for this option.

Day One makes a backup of the text portion of the user’s journal entries just before Day One is updated; the first time Day One is opened after iOS is updated; and once a week (the app has to be open for a weekly backup to take place). The 20 most recent backups are retained.

These backups are stored within the Day One area in the filesystem of the mobile device, and are accessible via the File Sharing area in iTunes. Please note: any time you delete Day One, all previous backups are also deleted, as they are stored in the Day One area in the device filesystem.

To recover entries via a Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC. On macOS 10.15 (Catalina), connecting the iOS device will use Finder instead. Details here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201301
  2. Connect your iOS device. (Dismiss any prompts or stop any processes to back up your device.)
  3. This guide shows how to access File Sharing for iOS devices.
  4. Click the Backups folder, then click and drag the folder to your Downloads folder.
  5. Open the Backup folder and you should see folders with dates to indicate when the backups were made.
  6. Download Day One Mend application here. This application will be needed to convert the backup files into a readable file for the new Day One application for Mac.
  7. Drag each Journal.sqlite file from the backup folder to Day One to inspect the amount of synced entries. Do this until the files have been inspected to know which backup has the most data.
  8. Click Export backup and save to Downloads.
  9. Open the new Day One app. Download here if needed.
  10. Click File > Import > Classic File
  11. Navigate to the Export.dayone file and import it.

Screen shots:

Day One Classic backup folder in iTunes/Finder File sharing. Click and drag this file to Downloads.

Open each backup folder and drag the Journal.sqlite file to Day One Mend.

When the highest amount of entries is located, click Export Journal… and save to Downloads.

Open the new Day One application and click File > Import > Classic File and select the Export.dayone file to import.

Note: Day One Classic (version 1.x) has not been updated since March 2016. It has been retired. We strongly recommend updating to the current version of Day One. See here.

By default, the Mac app creates a backup of your full journal every second day, keeping the 20 most recent. The settings for both frequency and retention can be changed in Settings > Backup.

The default location for v1.7 and above is:

~/Library/Containers/com.dayoneapp.dayone/Data/Library/Application Support/Backup

The default location for v1.5.5 and below is:

~/Library/Application Support/Day One/Backup

To restore from a backup:

First, open Day One settings (Day One > Settings) and select the “Sync” tab. Make a note of your current settings (i.e. whether you’re using iCloud, Dropbox, or a custom location). If you are using a custom location, make a note of the path to the journal file.

Next, navigate to the backup folder.

The simplest way to navigate to the backup folder is from within the Day One app:

  1. Open the Day One settings (Day One > Settings)
  2. Click the “Backup” tab
  3. Click “Show Backups Folder in Finder”

If you are unable to use the app to get to the backup folder, you can find it manually in Finder. However, the Library folder is hidden by default. To open it:

  1. Open a Finder window
  2. Click the “Go” menu.
  3. Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard
  4. An entry for “Library” will appear in menu list. Click it.
  5. Locate Containers/com.dayoneapp.dayone, and right click that file
  6. Select ‘Show Package Contents’
  7. Proceed to this path:
/Data/Library/Application Support/Backup

Once you have found the backup folder you will see a series of backup files that look like this:

Find the backup for the date you’d like to restore. If there are multiple backups on a single day, the most recent is the one with the larger number in parentheses.

Double-click the selected zip file to decompress it. One of the following will appear:

Journal.dayone
Journal_dayone

If “Journal_dayone” appeared, rename it (click it once, then press “Enter” to rename) to “Journal.dayone”.

Double-click the “Journal.dayone” file. Day One will ask if you would like to use the selected journal file. Click the “Yes” button.

You are now using the backup journal, but are not finished yet. You need to merge the backup data into your original journal.

Open Day One settings (Day One > Settings). Click on the “Sync” tab. If you were using iCloud prior to the restore, click the “Use iCloud…” button and follow the instructions. If you were using Dropbox, click the “Use Dropbox…” button and follow the instructions. If you were using Day One Sync prior to the restore, click the “Use Day One Sync…” button and follow the instructions. If you were using a custom location click the “Custom Location…” button and select the journal file you were using previously.

Upon successful completion of the previous step you will have restored your backup to your original location. If you wish, you can return to the backup folder and delete the “Journal.dayone” file. The zip file backups should remain.

On September 28, 2017, Dropbox discontinued their API which allows Day One to sync data. See here.
