According to recent news, Apple is rumored to release a new app this year related to journaling and life tracking. This is a testament to the growing interest in journaling and the many benefits it provides. We obviously believe in the value of writing and reflecting for personal growth and wellbeing, and we’re excited that Apple’s efforts will promote the practice to a wider audience. However, this also redoubles our commitment to making sure Day One remains the very best option for you — and for the rest of our loyal users.

Day One will continue to differentiate from Apple and other journaling apps with a focus on inspiring writing, beautiful design, security, and new innovations. In addition to all the great updates we’ve been rolling out this year (like the recent release of Day One on the web), we’re excited to share that we’re currently testing a long requested feature, “Shared Journals,” to allow small groups and family members to collaborate on a single shared journal. Look for updates on this in the coming months.

Our dedication and passion for creating an exceptional journaling experience have made Day One the beloved app it is today. This new development simply means it’s time for us to push ourselves to deliver even more unique features and capabilities that set us apart from the competition.

FAQs

What is the Day One on the web?

The Day One web app is a new way to use your Day One journal inside your favorite browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge). You just need access to the internet to log in to the web app.

How do I get started with Day One on the web?

In the Getting Started with Day One on the Web Help Guide, we cover the basics of getting started, including logging in, adding your encryption key, syncing/downloading your journal entries, composing a new journal entry, and more.

Is Day One on the web still in beta?

Yes, the Day one web app is still considered in beta, so we recommend backing up your journals before using it. In general, we recommend making regular backups of your journals from a desktop or mobile device once a month. Just note that backups aren’t yet available from inside the Day One web app, so you’ll need to use the iOS, Mac, or Android app to make a back or export of your journals

Does Day One on the web have the same features and functionality as the app for iOS, Android, and Mac?

We have tried to deliver as much of the core functionality as possible for v1 of the web app (like reading, browsing, writing, and editing your journal entries). Not all features and functionality are available on the web app yet, such as audio transcription, template creation, entry duration, and a calendar view of entries, but more features will come with time.

How secure is Day One on the web?

The Day One web app supports end-to-end encryption for all your journals and journal entries. (Just note that, currently, the mobile Day One app or Mac app is required to set up encryption for a user.)

Keep in mind that some browsers and browser extensions can compromise security in a number of ways. Chrome extensions could read anything you view on the web (although most don’t). For users who are extra concerned about security, we recommend using the Day One web app in “incognito mode” which often disables all extensions unless you explicitly enable them.

In addition, please be cautious when installing browser extensions and only install those from reputable sources that are well-reviewed by other users. Also, it’s important to keep your browser and all extensions updated to the latest version to mitigate potential security vulnerabilities.

Browser extension security is especially relevant if you are using a shared or public computer.
If using a shared computer, we always recommend using a private browsing session, In addition, please remember to log out on shared/public computer after each session. This will remove all Day One web app data from the computer.

Are my journals still encrypted? Where do I find my encryption key?

Yes, the Day One web app supports end-to-end encryption for all your journals and journal entries. (Just note that, currently, the mobile Day One app or Mac app is required to set up encryption for a user.)

To find your encryption key, please open the Day One app on your Apple or Android device. Verify the encryption key is present in Settings > Sync. Make sure your encryption key is backed up using one of the available methods or stored in a trusted password manager, then copy the key from the app and paste it to the web app (Note that we don’t yet support a QR code reader). At the moment, the mobile Day One app is required to set up encryption for a user.)

Does using Day One on the web count against my device limit?

For a limited time, the Day One web app won’t count against your device limit. In the future, syncing between the web app and mobile apps will be a Premium feature.

Is Day One on the web free for anyone to use?

Yes! We’re celebrating the launch with free syncing between web and native apps for all users regardless of subscription status. In the future, however, syncing between the web and other devices will be a Premium feature.

Are there any known issues with Day One on the web?

We’re already aware of a few bugs and feature requests, so to save you some time, we’ve put together this doc of known issues for the Day one web app.

Do I need an account to use Day One on the web?

Yes, you will need an account to login to the Day One web app. If you’re new to Day One (or you don’t have Day One installed on any other devices), you can create an account and start journaling with just the web app. Just note that we don’t yet have the ability to create an end-to-end encryption key from the web app, so you’ll need to have the Day One app installed on your iOS or Android device to generate a key.

If you have Day One installed on your iPhone, Android, or Mac, it’s a great idea to confirm that you have an account linked to the Day One app on your mobile device. You can do so by visiting the Settings page inside the app. Here’s more on creating a Day One account and Day One account management.

How do I report problems?

When you run into a problem, please report it to us using the “Report a problem” link in the top left corner of the main sidebar.  But before you do that, it might be a good idea to read the list of our caveats and known issues linked here.

We’ve been a bit quiet over the past year since we joined Automattic as we’ve been heads-down working on fundamental improvements to unlock our future roadmap. Security and privacy have always been our core beliefs for Day One, and over the past year, we’ve delivered several updates related to data protection. Assuring your precious data is backed up, private, and safe.

Basic Cloud Storage

Occasionally we would hear stories from users who had lost their phone or upgraded to a new phone without a backup and lost their journal. To solve this, in February 2022, we launched Basic Cloud Storage, which allows every user of Day One to securely back up their journal to the Day One server without opting into the paid Premium plan. Now free users can use a single device with Day One Sync and the ability to switch the device once per month.

Trash Can

Deleting an entry has always been a permanent action that sometimes feels uncomfortable when there’s no option to undo it if you make a mistake or change your mind. In May 2022, we launched the Trash Can feature where all delete actions are now a move-to-trash action where they can be restored or deleted permanently.

Day One Trash Can on iPhone

Version History

Day One has always been offline-first, designed to work fully when away from an internet connection and then sync up when an internet connection is available. Entry conflicts can happen when an entry has been modified before an existing update has synced from another device. To help solve this, in June 2022, we launched Version History, allowing users to view previous edits and easily roll back to an earlier version of the entry when needed.

Day One Entry Restore on iPhone

Android

We have a team dedicated to the Android platform, and we’ve made great strides towards feature parity with the Apple apps. We added encryption support in February 2022. Now we’re working on a new rich-text editor fully compatible with the features on iOS and Mac.

New Day One Editor on Android

And, coming soon…the web app

We also have a development team entirely focused on a new Web-based app to allow Day One to work in a web browser in an optimized way while remaining secure and encrypted. A web app will unlock Day One on Windows machines, Chromebooks, and more!

We value your business, and we’re here to continue improving Day One and innovating what it means to “keep a journal.”

Today, I’m thrilled to announce that Day One is being acquired by Automattic. This is incredibly exciting news. For the past 10 years since I started Day One, I’ve worked to not only create the best digital journaling experience in the world, but one that will last. By joining Automattic, I’m now more confident than ever that the preservation and longevity of Day One is sure. This acquisition will provide Day One access to the same technological, financial, and security benefits that WordPress.com, Tumblr, and other Automattic entities enjoy.

Automattic is led by founder Matt Mullenweg, a pioneer in the web publishing space and founder of WordPress.com. The Automattic teams have built and supported products and services with massive global scale, and I can’t imagine a more ideal home for Day One now and for the future.

During the past decade, our small software development team has had incredible accomplishments, earning prestigious design awards from Apple along with high praise from The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Wired, and more. The Day One app has been downloaded over 15 million times in 225 different countries/territories. The relentless commitment to innovation and refinement by the team are the reasons Day One is widely recognized as an enjoyable and trusted digital journaling platform.

When a small software company is acquired by a larger company, the original team is often swallowed up by the larger company. That’s not the case here. I’ll be remaining at the helm of Day One, leading the same passionate team that has been responsible for the development and design behind the app today. This means that the Day One you rely on to save your thoughts, photos, videos, audio recordings, and more isn’t going away. Instead, it’ll only get better, with future integrations with Tumblr and WordPress.com. Rest assured that Day One’s commitment to protecting your privacy remains unchanged. Safely protecting memories and creating a 100% personal space is the foundation upon which this company was built. (In fact, our technical capabilities around privacy are a large part of what Automattic finds valuable in our company).

It’s always been my deepest belief that personal life histories should be preserved. Thanks to the support of our incredible users, a sustainable subscription business model, a committed team, and new growth opportunities, the future is bright. We’re grateful you’ve been part of the Day One family and can’t wait to share this next chapter of our journey together.

–Paul Mayne, founder and CEO of Day One

Dear Day One User,

Thank you for finding and purchasing Day One. This is a project I’ve been wanting to create for several years as I struggled to find an application that suited my needs in keeping a regular journal.

Things came together over the past 4 months in a special way that I was able to commit time, energy and money to the creation of this application for the Mac and iPhone platforms. I designed this app to help users easily and comfortably put down in words what is on their mind without having distracting thoughts about technology or privacy. It doesn’t matter if it’s a single word or a 5000 words to describe your day, on the road or sitting at your computer, the important thing is to put it down and knowing it’s always available for you to recall and remember.

Eighteen days ago, on March 10th 2011, Day One launched with great success on both the Mac App store and the iTunes app store. It’s been very satisfying to hear from so many users that really get the idea of Day One and how this was exactly what they needed to start keeping a regular journal of their lives.

I made the decision to launch Day One without several core features that were planned for the final release. Using the application myself, I felt that even without every planned feature it was to a point that people can really start using it and writing. The beauty of the Mac and iTunes app stores is the application update process. It’s so easy and automatic that releasing regular iterative updates is a great plan for new applications.

I want users to know that there is nobody more excited about the continued development of Day One than me. We are currently working on an update for the Mac App that includes Search, Global Hot-key, an improved Read View, and several other small enhancements. This update will be available early April.

User feedback has been tremendous, I’ve been considering both what I feel is important to the future of the app with the user requests to weigh the priorities of each update. All while keeping the current Day One user interface clean, simple, easy to use and beautiful.

All of these updates are free as part of the current Day One application. Here’s a list of some (not all, we’ve got a few surprises up our sleeves) I will be adding to Day One over then next several months:

  • Search (Mac and iOS)
  • New Read View
  • System Hotkey Shortcut
  • Password Protection (Mac and iOS)
  • Export to PDF and RTF
  • Categories via #hashtag solution
  • Additional Formatting (Bold, Italic, auto Hyperlinking)
  • Markdown Support
  • Calendar View
  • Full-screen writing mode
  • iPad Application (Universal with current iPhone app)

Thank you for being a user and for being patient with features you are waiting for. You can expect great things.

Paul
