In today’s digital age, where lives seem more public than ever, there’s a quiet refuge that some choose to embrace—a sanctuary of thoughts and reflections that remain hidden from the world’s prying eyes.

Meet David Becker, a communications specialist hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, who has found solace and growth through journaling. In this interview, we’ll delve into the world of David Becker’s journaling experience.

Discovering the Art of Journaling

David’s journaling journey began in March 2015 when the journaling app Day One came into David’s life. Reflecting on this, David shared, “Journaling had been a part of my life, off and on, throughout 2012-2013 during my high school days.”

For David, journaling wasn’t merely about documenting life events; it was a way to nurture a dream of becoming a writer, particularly a tech journalist or blogger. It offered a space to express oneself, improve writing skills, and explore the fundamental aspects of the craft.

“Journaling became a way to not only express myself through writing, but improve as a writer, even if it was in one of the most basic and fundamental ways. However, it also enabled me to write about life but in a way that was not public. As an introvert, this is a great thing because our lives are very public now because not only do you have conversations and events in-person, but you additionally live another life online.

“With journaling on Day One, it allows you to live both lives but in a way that is private and kept from the general public. There could be something sitting on your mind in a day and you don’t necessarily want to talk about it publicly and that’s where a journal comes in handy because you can talk about it there and have it only been seen by you. On top of all of that, you can add photos and keep precious and important memories, good or bad. By doing that, I think seeing and reading that every now and then can help you grow as a person.”

Dear Friend: A Unique Journaling Format

David’s journal entries follow a format inspired by The Perks of Being a Wallflower, where every entry starts with “Dear friend.” It’s a touch of personalization that adds a unique flavor to journaling, making each entry feel like a conversation with a confidant.

The Where and When of Journaling

As a communications specialist, David’s life is undoubtedly busy. When it comes to where and when to journal, David explains: “Journaling about life usually happens during breaks at work or at home.” It’s a testament to the flexibility of journaling, proving that it can be integrated into daily routines, no matter how hectic they may be.

The Importance of Keeping It Private

Journaling often coincides with vulnerable moments, and these thoughts are meant solely for the journal keeper. David emphasizes the importance of keeping the journaling journey private. David advises, “Ensuring that you keep at it is crucial, and please remember that it’s an excellent way to support oneself mentally.” David suggests using passcodes and biometric locks like Face ID/Touch ID to safeguard personal thoughts.

“Journaling can come at a time when we are at our most vulnerable, and those times really only need to be seen by us, the ones doing the writing. Just because you wrote it does not mean it needs to be public.”

A Tool for Self-Reflection and Mental Health

Journaling isn’t just a hobby for David; it’s a tool for self-reflection and maintaining mental well-being. David shares this bit of encouragement, “Not only is it a fun hobby for people like myself, but it is a great way to keep yourself in tune with your life. Be a little more observant, but also know that it is okay to run to a journal and write those thoughts and feelings down. There’s a reason journaling has said to be an important way to help someone’s mental health. You get everything out there and then it’s not as hidden and kept away anymore. Lastly, even if the journal entry is a short one, if you keep at it each day, you’ll find you have a lot more to say than when you started.”

Favorite Features: Day One’s Lock Screen Widget

David’s most-used feature in Day One is the Lock Screen widget. “It’s not going to sound like much, but my most-useful feature is the Lock Screen widget on my iPhone, as well as on my iPad Air fifth generation with iPadOS 17. It helps me monitor my streak and reminds me to get that journal entry in for the day.

Journaling to Understand Who You Are and Who You are Becoming

In closing, David reflected on the profound impact of journaling, stating, “Journaling can be a way to truly get to know yourself at a personal and private level. Once you have so many journal entries, over the years, you can see who you are and have been as a person, the memories you have made along the way, dealing with the good and bad days, and perhaps who you are coming to be. I cannot think of another written-based medium that has that type of impact on someone.”

Dwayne Milley, husband to Karen, father to Deepika, and Vice President of operations at Karis Disability Services (formerly Christian Horizons), is a seasoned journaling enthusiast. Rooted in Toronto and hailing from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Dwayne has ventured through the paths of blogging to pen and paper journaling, eventually finding solace in the digital realms of the Day One app. Through reflections and recollections, Dwayne shares how journaling has not just documented his life but shaped it.

The Evolution of Dwayne’s Journaling Journey

Dwayne’s foray into the world of journaling began with blogging in 2005, a space where he could record his thoughts on the books he read.

“I had been reading quite a bit, and wanted to write about what I was reading. Blogging was ‘the thing’ in those days, and it didn’t seem to occur to me to journal. In retrospect, it was because I wanted to do it on my computer, and journaling was a ‘pen and paper’ thing. That effort lasted a year – from June 2005 to June 2006.”

His journey took a turn towards a more structured approach when he was introduced to the “Life Journal” in 2006, a tool that provided him with the structure he needed to organize his thoughts on paper.

“During this same time, I played around with a Medium Blog, hosted my own domain, and discovered Day One Journal. Eventually, I copied all my online entries into Day One and deleted them from online. Around 6 years ago, I began to import pdf copies of my ‘pen and paper’ entries into Day One, back-dating them to the date they were written. Then, over the course of two years and leveraging “On this Day” as a prompt, I transcribed all the pdf files into text.”

The Importance of Journaling & ‘Real Time’ Reflection

When it comes to why journaling is important to Dwayne, he explains: “Journaling supports me to both reflect and recollect. Reflection often comes first, where I think back over the events and conversations of the previous day.

“I’m an ‘out-loud’ thinker. Journaling is a form of that for me, where I get the thoughts out of my head and can see them in front of me. Rather than burden others with all my thoughts, journaling is a productive way for me to sort through them and decide on actions and priorities for me. This is ‘real time’ reflection.”

Three Themes in Dwayne’s Journals

Dwayne navigates through life’s intricacies with a journal that houses reflections and recollections on his readings, social media, and daily occurrences. He explains:

“My journaling falls along three main themes (listed below, not in order of importance, because they’re all important):

  1. Reading – I read a lot. It helps me stay sane. I have one journal simply called “Books”, and it’s the one journal where I use a template. I’ll note the dates I started and ended the book, the format (Kindle, Kobo, audio, etc.), and some of my reflections and learnings from the book.
  2. Social Media – In 2021 I read, Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now, by Jaron Lanier. While he and I aren’t part of the same Faith tradition, a lot of what he wrote aligned for me, and I decided to ease up on how I use Social Media. Day One has ‘scratched that itch’ for me. As well, I still use Instagram, and appreciate the link between Instagram and Day One.
  3. Reflection and Recollection – I add anything and everything into my “Dwayne’s Journal” throughout the day…… it helps me recall little things later, and it helps with short- and long-term reflection. I know people who seem to remember things easily – that’s not me. Just because something is prompted doesn’t mean it’s not sincere – I sincerely want people to know I care, and when I remember something in advance by writing it in Day One, it helps me demonstrate that I care when I recall later. Others regularly express appreciation when I recall something and we can enjoy the mutually shared memory. Not once has someone told me that they didn’t appreciate me recalling a shared experience with them from a year or years before – rather, they enjoy the mutually shared memory.”

Dwayne’s Tips for Aspiring Journalists

For those eager to embark on their journaling journey, Dwayne advises starting small, without lofty goals.

“My advice – just start. Don’t try to journal every day. Don’t commit to a lofty goal….. just start.

“Choose a topic or a theme and choose to make a daily entry about it for a week. Then choose another theme and journal about it.

“For example, I’m typing this and one of our cats is asleep on the bed in front of me. Someone could choose to make a daily post of their pet, with a picture, and note what they were thinking or doing in that moment – just one a day for a week. It’ll help build the habit. And, I’m certain, next year when you read it, you’ll react to it. Maybe the thought was deep (in retrospect) and had impact in the days and weeks ahead. Or maybe it was wonderfully benign, and we realize how much of our lives are made up of mundane, ‘in-between’ kinds of things.”

“Just start. Don’t try to journal every day. Don’t commit to a lofty goal….. just start. Choose a topic or a theme and choose to make a daily entry about it for a week. Then choose another theme and journal about it.”

Finding Beauty in the In-Betweens

Journaling has enlightened Dwayne on the importance of the “in-between” moments that constitute the majority of our lives. Whether it’s chronicling the waiting period during the adoption process of his daughter or reflecting on the impact of his surgeries, Dwayne has found depth and meaning in the monotonous, “in-between” stages of life.

“Journaling has helped me understand and see the importance of the monotonous parts of my life, or the in-betweens.  We tend to live our lives going from one high or low point to the next, from one momentous reality to the next. But most of our lives are lived in between these moments.

“For proper credit, I was first introduced to this idea of ‘the in-betweens’ in an article I read long before I started journaling. Written by Mike Yaconelli in 1994, he was reflecting on a book written by Thomas Kelly in 1941, called, A Testament of Devotion. Kelly was a Quaker Teacher who was writing about finding God in the stillness amidst the busyness of the modern life (in 1941!).

Kelly wrote about it as ‘living passively’, or ‘living in the passive voice’. Yaconelli reflects on it like this –

“Journaling has helped me understand and see the importance of the monotonous parts of my life, or the in-betweens.  We tend to live our lives going from one high or low point to the next, from one momentous reality to the next. But most of our lives are lived in between these moments.

Beginnings and endings. Starts and finishes. Those are the parts of life that grab my attention. But the passive life is the life of inbetweens, life in the middle. “God,” the passive life says, “is found in the everydayness of life, in the middle of life. God is sneaking around in the ordinariness of each day, longing to be noticed, longing to be discovered. It is tragic that much of my life I have looked for God in the momentous, and instead He’s been waiting in the moment.”

– Mike Yaconalli

I didn’t realize how much this concept resonated with me until I had journaled for some time. I found myself going back through old scans I had made to find and re-read this article again. Now I re-read this article and the book itself every couple of years.”

Harnessing the Power of the Day One App

In the vast array of features offered by the Day One app, the “On This Day” stands unrivaled for Dwayne, offering a pathway to traverse back in time and relive moments, fostering a sense of reflection and gratitude that enriches his everyday life.

“I use only one template – for my book reading and summary. For everything else, it’s a combination of pictures, paragraphs, bullet lists, and pdf attachments.”

Dwayne’s journal template for books

Dwayne also explains how Day One has other uses:

“I’ve got a couple of book ideas kicking around in my mind. It’s a dream to write a book one day. It’s not a goal I’m actively working on; but writing every day helps me to practice the discipline and create content that one day might inform a book. To that end, one of my journals is simply named, ‘my book’. I copy entries there if I think it suits the theme. As I read “on this day”, I add more entries.

“And last year, I decided to get into Vinyl Records. I created a journal to track the vinyl as I listen to it. I document what I played, what I was doing as I listened, who I was with (if anyone), and so on. It’s been helping me live in the moment.”

Finding Meaning in the Mundane

Dwayne Milley’s journey paints a rich tapestry of a life well-reflected upon, a chronicle of ordinary moments that have amassed to narrate an extraordinary life. Through the lens of Dwayne’s extensive journaling experience, we learn the potent power of reflection, recollection, and the value of the ‘in-betweens.’

“Journaling, for me, helps me see meaning in the mundane,” Dwayne explains. “my main purposes in journaling are for recollection and reflection. Recollection means I needed to have written things to recollect them. Then, I reflect on those things. Sometimes it’s a passive reflection, where the reminder of a seemingly boring event or happening sits with me throughout the day.”

“Journaling, this practice of recollection and reflection, helps me in my Faith life. I’m mindful that Day One users are people from diverse cultural and faith backgrounds, so I share this not to promote my own, but to share how significant Day One is in helping me understand who I am in the context of family, faith, work, and more, as I read and write my own story and reflect on the congruency between who I want to be and who I am.”

The commitment to a daily routine of journaling unveils a deeper understanding and appreciation of life’s nuances, reminding us that within the ordinary lies the truly extraordinary. It beckons aspiring journalers to take the first simple step – to just start. And who knows, that small step might just open up a rich world of reflection and deeper connection with the daily moments that craft our larger life narrative.

For over five years now, Ambre Green, a program manager hailing from the East Coast, has integrated journaling into her daily life.

Whether it’s the spontaneous notes of reflection or the structured collection of memorable moments, Ambre’s approach to journaling illuminates the infinite possibilities that lie between pen and paper, or, in this modern age, between fingers and screen.

Finding Reflection and Perspective Through Journaling

Ambre articulates the significance journaling holds for her, noting, “Journaling is important to me because it helps me to reflect and bring life into perspective.”

By dabbling in journaling at different stages in her life, Ambre has fostered a deeper connection with herself, a journey that’s spanned over half a decade of consistent journaling.

“Journaling is important to me because it helps me to reflect and bring life into perspective.”

The Daily Glimpses of Life

Ambre enthusiastically shares the myriad of topics her journals encompass, stating, “I have 9 journals on the Day One app but the one I use most frequently consists of my daily life experiences and how it develops my relationship with God. Other journals include ideas that I get about my blog/website, and my diet and exercise to name a few.”

The names of a few of Ambre’s journals

Carving Out Time for Self-reflection

In a world that’s continually chasing the clock, Ambre doesn’t bind her journaling habit to a rigid schedule. “I don’t have a set time. I journal multiple times throughout the day. As thoughts, ideas, and reflections come to me, I journal them,” she explains, demonstrating a spontaneous approach that feels both refreshing and encouraging for aspiring journal keepers.

Tailoring Journaling to Suit Your Needs

For those looking to cultivate a journaling habit, Ambre advises a personalized approach, asserting, “My advice is to journal in the way that is most meaningful, productive, and positive for your life’s journey.” This notion emphasizes the freedom and flexibility journaling offers, accommodating a spectrum of styles and preferences.

Leveraging the Day One App for a Richer Journaling Experience

Ambre heaps praise on the Day One app, highlighting several features she finds indispensable.

“There are quite a few features that I use and find helpful. I like features such as “tags” and the search option. They help me to find entries from the past. The “text to journal” helps me send a quick note to the app so that I can come back and journal in more detail about it later. The “share” options are beneficial for saving photos, links, and other information/data from another platform directly to the app.

“The “On This Day” feature is great because it takes you back to today’s specific day in previous years where you have a journal entry. Then there is the ability to record voice journal entries where I can record audio only or also transcribe what I’ve spoken. By speaking out my thoughts it helps to release stress. It’s sort of like a little self “talk-therapy”.

“I’ve also recently created a journal template for a journal that I keep about my children. I appreciate being able to share with them how they have grown at different points in their lives. It helps to build their confidence and influence their own positive introspection.”

Capturing Small Details, Small Progress

“Life is busy and with the loads we may carry, we can often take for granted or forget the smallest things. Keeping a journal has reminded me that progress isn’t perfect. Small progress is still progress and consistency begets results.”

Ambre encapsulated the essence of journaling with a poignant note: “Journaling is the reflective and introspective proverbial journey of life.”

Through the words she writes across her journal pages, Ambre Green navigates the complex maze of life, finding reflection, understanding, and a deeper connection with the self.

“Life is busy and with the loads we may carry, we can often take for granted or forget the smallest things. Keeping a journal has reminded me that progress isn’t perfect. Small progress is still progress and consistency begets results.”

When it comes to journaling, everyone has a unique approach that suits their life and their needs. Today, we’re diving into the journaling journey of Nycole Rosen, the Chief Information Officer of BGSF, a staffing and consulting firm based in Plano, Texas.

From physical scrapbooking to embracing digital platforms like Day One, Nycole opens up about the significance of documenting her experiences and emotions through journaling.

The Start of a Lifelong Habit

Nycole’s journaling journey began back in 1991. “I started journaling in 1991 and have kept a journal on and off over the years since then. It started with a new pretty book each year that I would fill up, and then I’d get a new one the next year,” she recalls.

Her enthusiasm for capturing memories didn’t stop at just writing; she became part of the scrapbooking craze in the 1990s. “I got very into the scrapbooking craze of the 1990’s and documented my adventures through pictures with fun layouts, stickers and text.” Eventually, she transitioned to digital journaling, importing all her physical journal entries into the Day One app.

Why Journaling Matters to Nycole

For Nycole, journaling serves as more than just a pastime—it’s a means of preserving memories and emotional well-being. “I have this fear that I’ll lose my memory—possibly from watching loved ones and friends experience memory loss,” Nycole admits. “Being a minimalist, I put my time and energy into experiences over things, and want to be able to remember all the fun things I’ve done throughout my life.”

Journaling is not only a memory vault for Nycole but also a form of therapy. “Journaling is also a way for me to work through problems by writing my thoughts—both rational and emotional, sort of my therapy,” she shares.

What Goes Inside Nycole’s Journal

When it comes to content, Nycole’s journal is a blend of daily activities and emotional check-ins. “I usually journal about day-to-day activity—what I did, where I went, who I was with, etc. However, if I’m feeling big ‘feelings,’ I’ll write about that—whether that’s happy, sad, anxious, frustrated, whatever.”

Beyond that, her journal occasionally features professional tidbits like screenshots of her work calendar or meeting notes. “It’s fun to look back on projects years later to remember the work that went into making things happen,” she adds.

Some of the impressive stats from Nycole’s journals

Journaling as a Morning Ritual

“I’m an early morning journaler—it’s when things are quiet and my mind is clear,” says Nycole. She tries to update her journal daily, although sometimes she catches up on weekends. She emphasizes the importance of flexibility, saying, “Whatever I do, I give myself grace and permission to journal however my mind needs me to that day—I don’t want it to become an added stressor or a chore.”

Nycole’s Tips for Aspiring Journalers

“Journal what’s important to you—not what is important to someone else,” advises Nycole. She encourages people to find a system and subject matter that they genuinely enjoy. “If it becomes a burden, you won’t keep up with it,” she warns.

Lessons Learned and the Way Forward

Through her journaling journey, Nycole has gained valuable insights. “I’ve learned that I live a pretty great life! I do fun things, I meet great people and have wonderful memories.”

She acknowledges the challenges she’s faced but values the progression and self-discovery her journaling journey has offered. “I’ve also learned that my journal is for me—nobody else. I’m not trying to write a top-selling book that anyone else cares about. Nope, this one’s all for me—and that feels a tiny bit self-indulgent, but I make no apologies.”

The Gift of Each Day

“At the end of this adventure of life, you can’t take anything with you. If I’m lucky enough to be able to look back on a lifetime of memories, I look forward to reading and re-reading my journals so I can relive all the memories, feelings, and challenges that I faced over the years,” Nycole reflects.

From scrapbooks of the ’90s to digital entries of today, her journaling journey serves as a window into the life she’s lived, cherished, and learned from. As she puts it, “Each day is a gift, and being able to relive them is the ultimate re-gift.”

In a world where stories often go untold, Keena Davis stands as a beacon of inspiration and resilience. Her journaling journey is not just about self-expression; it’s a compelling narrative that has the power to inspire us all.

Keena transforms the simple act of writing into a tool for change, empowerment, and personal growth. In this interview, we delve into the depths of Keena’s passion for journaling and explore how her written words serve as a window to her indomitable spirit.

The Beginnings: A Love for Stories

“I started journaling at the age of seven years old. I love the ideas of my stories about my childhood and other experiences written in books,” Keena shares.

Even before the age of smartphone apps, Keena had been keeping multiple journals. “I have kept multiple journals on & off for many years. Wayyyy before discovering the Day One journal app.”

The Importance of Journaling

For Keena, journaling serves multiple purposes. “Journaling is very important to me. Because it allows me to focus more on my thoughts. I can easily express myself naturally and release my true feelings,” she explains.

Moreover, it helps her strategize ways to make her life easier. Diagnosed seven years ago with Morquio type A, a rare genetic disorder, Keena faces challenges such as reduced mobility and the need for weekly infusions. Journaling has become a way for her to navigate these challenges.

Overcoming Obstacles

Keena writes about a wide array of topics: “I’m usually writing about my childhood memories, how I became disabled, relationships, family, friends, dealing with survival and how I have had to adjust with weekly infusions.” Each entry is an intimate look at her life, a life that she admits “hasn’t been easy for me based on the obstacles I had to overcome.”

Frequency and Breaks: The Rhythm of Journaling

Keena tends to journal frequently, often multiple times throughout her day. “From early in the morning to midday,” she states. But she also recognizes the importance of breaks, even though she admits, “I feel lost when I take breaks.”

Going Digital: The Role of Technology

Keena finds journaling on her phone particularly convenient. “Building a journaling habit on your phone is a convenient way of doing it more often. It’s always good traveling with you,” she notes.

Her favorite features of the Day One app include the daily writing prompts, journal templates for different kinds of entries, and the ability to attach photos to complement her words.

Insights Gained

Journaling has been instrumental in Keena’s personal growth. “I have come a long way. I have learned that my stories speak volumes. There’s inspiration behind each of them,” she says.

And her aspirations are clear: “Each of my stories holds inspiration. I want to be successful at doing exactly that, inspiring others.”

“Each of my stories holds inspiration. I want to be successful at doing exactly that, inspiring others.”

Keena’s Motto

Keena has a motto that embodies the essence of her journaling journey: “My motto is ‘If It Ain’t Real, It Ain’t Right.'” For Keena, writing is an extension of her identity, a vessel to carry her stories, aspirations, and the intricacies of her life to the world. “This is who I am, a writer,” she proudly declares.

Keena’s journey with journaling is a testament to the power of the written word in helping us navigate the complexities of life, no matter the challenges we face. As she embarks on her ongoing journey of self-discovery, survival, and inspiration, she remains forever for the gift that journaling has given her: a platform to be heard, understood, and hopefully, to inspire.

Ken Frei, a product management leader residing in Lehi, Utah, USA, has embraced the art of journaling since his early years. “My parents encouraged me to journal as a kid, so I’ve journaled on and off since I was around 8 years old,” Ken shared.

“I started out with a handwritten journal which I wrote in every month or so as a kid. I didn’t journal much in my teenage years. I picked the habit back up at 19 years old when I served a 2 year church mission to Ghana, Africa where I wrote in my journal every day. As an adult, I began using an electronic journal, using a couple different apps before settling on Day One. I’ve written in my journal 3-5 times a month now for many years.”

The Heart of Journaling

For Ken, journaling isn’t just a mere act of writing; it’s an exploration into the self. He states, “Journaling is important to me for a few reasons:

  1. It’s therapeutic to get my thoughts and feelings out onto the page.
  2. It helps clarify my thinking.
  3. It helps me remember experiences, moments, and details years later that I otherwise would have forgotten.
  4. When I review past journal entries, I get to learn from my own experience.
  5. I believe it will be interesting and valuable to my family in the future after I’m gone.”

The Contents of Ken’s Journals

His entries, while sometimes serving as a travel log, often dive deeper into introspection, capturing the emotions and nuances of daily life.

“I make an effort though, to write entries that capture thoughts and feelings I had during the day, and experiences or moments that I had that I don’t want to forget in the future.”

Building a Journaling Routine

Ken’s commitment to journaling is evident in his nightly routine. “I have a journaling reminder in my phone each night before I go to bed that reminds me to journal,” he says. This reminder isn’t just about maintaining consistency, but an opportunity for him to reflect and process the day’s happenings.

Ken’s Tips for Aspiring Journalers

For those looking to embark on a journaling journey, Ken advises simplicity: “Make it easy on yourself or you won’t be successful in building a habit.”

“Even if you just dictate a sentence or two that your phone transcribes in your journal, that’s wonderful. When you catch yourself feeling joy, excitement, sadness, worry, or really any emotion during the day, write down a brief thought about how you’re feeling. That’s really all it takes. Over time, you’ll start seeing tremendous value from doing that and you’ll start to learn what works best for you in your journaling practice.”

“When you catch yourself feeling joy, excitement, sadness, worry, or really any emotion during the day, write down a brief thought about how you’re feeling. That’s really all it takes.”

Insights Gained

Revisiting past entries has revealed patterns and insights for Ken. “I find it fascinating to re-read old journal entries describing the stress and anxiety around decisions I faced back then. Now, with hindsight, I witness how I navigated those challenges. This treasure trove of experiences increases my confidence and helps me make more informed decisions today.”

Tools of the Trade

Within the Day One app, Ken is particularly fond of the ‘On This Day‘ feature. “Each day, it resurfaces entries from the same date in previous years. This offers not only a dose of nostalgia and joy but also serves as a learning portal into past decisions.”

“I also have a reminder set to go off each day before bed that reminds me to reflect on the day and write in my journal. I have also connected Instagram to my journal so that if I post photos there it will automatically upload to my journal which makes it easy. I also love the daily prompt that Day One suggests in the app. It’s helpful to spark ideas for things to write about.

In Ken’s Words

“Journaling has made me more observant, quicker to recognize the blessings in my life and to learn the lessons from challenging experiences. Journaling is almost like my personal therapist or coach. It’s a great habit, well worth the time invested to do it.”

Unleashing Your Inner Sage

The journey of Ken Frei, through continents and decades, underpins the universality and timelessness of journaling. His insights offer both a mirror and a map for those looking to embark on their own journaling endeavors. In the words, memories, and reflections penned down, lies a universe waiting to be explored.

For many, journaling is a personal endeavor, a silent conversation with oneself. For Lumin Grace, a writer, soul coach, and speaker in women’s empowerment, it’s a vital aspect of her creative and spiritual life.

Based in Los Angeles but living as a full-time digital nomad, Lumin shares her thoughts on journaling, how it empowers her, and why it’s more than just pen to paper.

The Start of a Lifelong Passion

“I’ve been journaling for as long as I can remember. As early as 10 years old,” says Lumin, recalling the school days when she first discovered the joy of expressing herself through writing. “It started in school where we had to journal for 10-20 minutes upon arrival. This memory comes back to me now as I answer this question. We were setting the tone for expressing ourselves. I loved it. I later began to use writing/ journaling as a means of creative expression. Storytelling and crafting poetry.”

Empowering through Journaling

Lumin offers this insight: “The power of journaling is just that – it is a type of power. It is a method for empowering myself. The act of journaling, in all its various ways, feeds my multi-dimensional creative soul. I live for full expression in as many ways as possible.

“The moment I realized that journaling was more than just pen to paper (although my most favorite) my world expanded. It is my playground. It is important because I granted myself the permission to be as bold and daring in these journal possibilities. The power of finding my voice, becoming vulnerable with myself and truly daring to dream all add to the power journaling provides.”

“Journaling is the best gift I can give my soul. I am able to hear myself. My inner dialogue. It is the ultimate ‘ME’ time. It is my first point of courage, before I express and teach courage to others.”

A Window to Various Aspects of Life

Lumin’s journaling is multifaceted, from her most used ‘Life’ journal to her business-building journal. She writes about the successes and failures, the lessons learned, and captures kind words from friends and loved ones.

“The beauty of my entire life is that all these moments are meant for me to use in my teachings now as a full time coach and mentor,” she reflects.

“It is amazing to see how I dare to have visions and bring them to life. The behind-the-screens in building a business, brand a life has been my favorite. I see the journey from ideas, courageous actions and serendipity unfolding. The successes, the flops all of the lessons along the way. I love being able to reference the days, moments and years with ease. Capturing and saving the kind words and audios from friends, clients and loved-ones is so amazing as well.”

Daily Rituals and Techniques

A thoughtful and disciplined writer, Lumin’s daily routine includes journaling “after I take a few mindfulness minutes after waking up” and at the end of the day. From capturing dreams to setting the tone for the day with personal inspirations and gratitudes, her journaling practice is a well-orchestrated ritual.

“For me, capturing my dreams in a journal is important as they leave me clues and messages for the journey. I also enjoy the morning journaling because I set the tone with personal inspirations and gratitudes for the day. At night I reflect on the a-ha moments and the continued vision for my life.”

Lumin’s Tips for Using the Day One Journal App

Lumin’s approach to journaling is rich and varied. She appreciates features of the Day One app, like the daily writing prompt:

“I like the daily journal prompt. I make use of it about once a week. Regardless of whether I write on the prompt, simply seeing the question allows me to stop and answer the question in my soul and outloud.”

She also loves the flexibility of multiple journals. “Keeping my actual dreams, business, and life journals separate has been one of my favorite features.

“As a full time digital nomad, I am making memories across every city and country I find myself in. I get to save them in the journal app along with words and memories of how the moments made me feel.”

Lumin shared a few screenshots of her different journals, along with a snapshot of her journal entries.

“I also am living for being able to do voice to text. This was a fun addition.”

“I also use the shortcut to save photos and videos directly from my camera roll almost daily. I love having my memories added in. This is a quick journal moment I love. As a full time digital nomad, I am making memories across every city and country I find myself in. I get to save them in the journal app along with words and memories of how the moments made me feel.”

Lumin’s Encouragement and Advice

For those wanting to begin journaling, Lumin offers encouragement:

“Find a way you best like to express yourself and make that the way you journal. If you like creating videos, do that. If you are more connected to writing, by all means use that way. If you simply want to journal a photo, as they say it is worth a thousand words, then snap away. Make journaling and any other habit you want to create sustainable to the way you naturally like to move and show up in life. Dabble with other ways, but find which methods work best for you. I also say just have fun. Make it your own. There are zero rules to it.”

The Healing Power of Journaling

Through her journaling, Lumin has found healing, spirituality, and hope. She explains, “Journaling has been deeply spiritual for me. The sharing, even with myself, is healing. I recognize that I journal primarily with a hopeful disposition. That my words carry weight for my present and my future. It has been the catalyst of consistency. The main thread that ties my entire life’s journey together. I learned about myself and just how deep I am. It has taught me that my voice matters.”

Lumin Grace’s perspective on journaling reveals the depth and richness of this seemingly simple practice. As a woman inspiring others to live authentically and courageously, her thoughts on journaling offer a glimpse into her vibrant and reflective inner world.

“I recognize that I journal primarily with a hopeful disposition. That my words carry weight for my present and my future. It has been the catalyst of consistency. The main thread that ties my entire life’s journey together. I learned about myself and just how deep I am. It has taught me that my voice matters.”

Her closing thoughts aptly capture her relationship with journaling: “Journaling is the best gift I can give my soul. I am able to hear myself. My inner dialogue. It is the ultimate ‘ME’ time. It is my first point of courage, before I express and teach courage to others.” Her words are not only an endorsement of journaling but an invitation to embrace it as a powerful means of self-discovery and empowerment.

Francesca Omisakin, a consultant community paediatrician based in Thurrock, Essex, England, offers a uniquely profound insight into her life through the fascinating lens of her lifelong journaling habit.

Through the continuous exploration of her thoughts, emotions, and daily events, Francesca weaves a tapestry of self-discovery and self-improvement. In this interview, we explore her journaling journey that is reflective of her love for literature and her passionate dedication to helping others.

The Journey Begins: An Inspired Childhood

Influenced by the likes of Adrian Mole and Margaret from Judy Blume’s work, Francesca began journaling at the age of 11.

“That’s 36 years of writing. I was drawn to idea of documenting my incessant internal monologue. Then helped me make sense of all the confusing feelings and social situations that I experienced at that time. It was also practice writing for the book that I wanted to have written and published by the time I was 15 years old (that didn’t happen!).

“My journal is a safe repository of those first thoughts that enter and flow uninhibited and unrestrained through my mind, musings that I don’t want to discuss with even my closest companions.”

“I discovered Day One in 2019. I still keep a paper journal, old habits die hard, I do love the physical act of writing (very similar to the conversations about paper books vs Kindle), but I very much enjoy the versatility a digital journal brings.”

The intimate act of penning her thoughts appealed to her need to make sense of her internal monologue and understand the complexities of adolescence. As Francesca fondly reminisces, “My journal is a safe repository of those first thoughts that enter and flow uninhibited and unrestrained through my mind, musings that I don’t want to discuss with even my closest companions.

“I still write about drama that is my life, with me at the centre stage! There was a phase in my life where my journaling was not unlike Bridget Jones in ‘Bridget Jone’s Diary’ by Helen Fielding, but with my entries starting with seemingly motivational phrases and quotations like YOU’LL FEEL CALM IF YOU WALK AWAY FROM THE THINGS YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT AND CONCENTRATE ON THOSE YOU CAN INFLUENCE and then me proceeding to write how I was not living up to those standards!”

A Life Chronicled: From Personal Insights to Professional Reflections

Over the years, Francesca’s journal has grown into a testament of her life. As a paediatrician who has been working in the National Health Service for over two decades, her journals bear witness to the emotional and physical toll of her gruelling journey. She shares, “The blank pages of August in my 2000 journal speak volumes about the exhausting first weeks as a junior doctor.”

In addition to her professional reflections, her journal serves as a platform for self-evaluation and growth, capturing her aspirations, experiences, and personal check-ins. Her journal entries are a balance between reflecting on the past, processing the present, and dreaming about the future.

Multi-Faceted Journaling With the Day One App

Francesca transitioned from traditional journaling to using the Day One App in 2019, keeping separate digital journals for different aspects of her life. Ranging from her daily thoughts and feelings, food and exercise tracking, writing exercises, and reflections on therapy sessions, each journal is a rich chronicle of Francesca’s journey in its own right.

The features of the Day One App, including the ability to open multiple journals, fill in entries from past years, reflect on what she was doing on the same day in previous years, and the capability to upload pictures, add a distinctive touch to her journaling experience.

Francesca’s shares her favorite things about the Day One app:

  • The ability to open several journals at time so that I can chart different aspects of my life
  • The ability to fill in entries from years back so that I can record all the information from my hand written diaries into digital form (a ‘little project’ I am working on – but likely to take a very long to complete, tackling all the entries from 1987 – 2018!)
  • The ‘On This Day’ feature, with the ability to look back and reflect on what I was doing that same day in previous years
  • That I can upload pictures. I try and be selective but I write a food blog and I have a seemingly insatiable appetite for taking pictures of every meal I eat, therefore many of my photos reflect my food journey for that day!

Inspiration From Francesca’s Journals

“When I first started with Day One I enthusiastically used some of their templates, like Daily Self and Day Summary, which helped structure my thoughts about what had been good about that day and what my fears and worries were on the start of that day. Now I also have a template to record my diet and exercise.”

The Ritual of Journaling: Evening Reflections

Journaling is not just a habit for Francesca, but an end-of-day ritual. “It’s like letting out a long slow breath that I have been holding in all day. It’s my equivalent of ‘writing Hygge’ – it’s my space, my time to slow down, my opportunity to connect with myself but also think about my other relationships in the world,” she muses.

While she primarily journals in the evening, Francesca also occasionally uses her mornings or other parts of the day to document her intentions and reflections. “I get to work pretty early and if I’m feeling alive and buzzing (very rarely) and I don’t have a clinic to prepare for, I might spend a few minutes updating my Day One journal with my intentions, aspirations and expectations of the day ahead.

“Journaling is like letting out a long, slow breath that I have been holding in all day. It’s my equivalent of ‘writing Hygge’ – it’s my space, my time to slow down, my opportunity to connect with myself but also think my other relationships.”

“When I first signed up to Day One in October 2019, I was so excited by it that I would journal all day using the app on my phone, giving a running commentary on anything I was doing that day. However, I soon settled back into that version of myself that just prefers to write ‘when the hurly-burly’s done, when the battle’s lost and won’!”

The Lessons Learned: Personal Evolution

Through the years, Francesca’s journaling has revealed consistent patterns and developments in her personality and attitude.

“I’ve learned that I’m the same person—I love writing, I often write about the same things, I have incredibly, the same thought processes over the past three decades, my outlook and attitudes are largely the same. I take much solace in this safe place to vent and express the secret parts of my life.

“But I’m also different—I have spent much of my journalling time in a fairly negative state of mind; however over the past few years I’ve been starting to examine my thought processes and attitudes with curiosity and compassion. The self-compassion aspect is that which is largely missing from my earlier journals and perhaps reflected in my relations and expectation of the people around me. It’s been a journey. I’ve tried to be more balanced in sharing the good as well as the bad and in that same vein, trying to share the best of myself with other people.”

Francesca’s Tip for Building a Journaling Habit

Francesca offers several tips for building a regular journaling habit:

  • Set aside a regular time that is your time
  • Reduce unpleasant distractions
  • Make sure you have your creature comforts around you
  • Don’t be so rigid about having to write about certain things, just go with the flow. Sometimes you might want to write paragraphs of flowing text and other times it’s just a list of things you did that day.

A Journal as a Lifelong Companion

Journaling, for Francesca, is akin to a trustworthy confidant. As she aptly puts it, “My journal feels like the twin sister I’ve always wanted. She knows everything about me, and I am not afraid to tell her anything.” It’s more than a hobby or routine—it’s a source of comfort, encouragement, and most importantly, self-discovery.

In sharing her journey, Francesca emphasizes that journaling isn’t about rigid standards but the freedom to express and explore oneself. Whether it’s paragraphs of flowing text or a simple list of the day’s events, journaling can be personalized to fit your individual needs, helping you learn, grow, and navigate the chapters of your life.

So, take a cue from Francesca and embark on your own journaling adventure, capturing the moments that shape your life and celebrating how far you’ve come.

David Lisa, a retired Library Administrator and an avid journal keeper from Williamstown, New Jersey, has been keeping a journal since 1973, making it an impressive 50-year journey.

Dave shares his insights, experiences, and tips on the art of journaling, offering inspiration and guidance to those seeking to build a journaling habit.

Discovering the Journey of Journaling

Reflecting on the significance of journaling in his life, Dave explains, “It’s been important to me, over the years, to take some time to reflect on both important milestones in my life and everyday stuff that happens. This enables me to sort things out and come to terms with things as they are happening and to reflect on them when I read the journal entries at some point in the future.”

“It’s been important to me, over the years, to take some time to reflect on both important milestones in my life and everyday stuff that happens.”

Exploring the Contents of David’s Journal

Dave’s journal entries cover a broad range of subjects. He explains, “I journal about whatever occurs to me.

“If something that really concerns me is happening in my life, I chronicle that in my entries with priority.

“Sometimes, I find pictures on social media that fascinate me. I am a big comic book fan, so one thing I collect are pictures of comic book covers. So, many times I will just assemble several covers in one post, and make some comments. When I bring up the post later, it fills me with nostalgia as I remember reading the comic book and/or buying it off the newsstand in the past.

“I use the IFTTT ability to bring in links to YouTube videos as Day One entries. This shows what I’m currently interested in on a daily basis.

“I also like to assemble pictures and video that I taken with my iPhone into entries illustrating what I’ve accomplished on a particular day. For example, I recently bought a house and I chronicled the entire process from looking at houses, to buying, to packing, to moving, to unpacking in Day One journal entries. This has helped to keep me motivated to complete this project quickly, efficiently and with enjoyment.

Dave’s journal

“I have been working on a retrospective journal entry project based upon photos from past years and journal entries from as long as 50 years ago. I will take a photo of my original handwritten entries, scan the text of these original journal entries and take a snapshot with my iPhone of any actual photos I may have included to accompany them. I include all of this in the entry. Once this project is complete, I will have brought over all of my original handwritten journal entries to Day One.”

Embracing a Flexible Journaling Routine

Unlike some who adhere to strict journaling schedules, Dave doesn’t confine himself to a specific time to journal. He explains, “I journal anytime of the day or night as the motivation occurs to me. I don’t normally need any drive to make entries. It’s become part of my daily routine. I am very goal oriented so continuing my journal streak is important to me and serves as motivation. I’m currently at 651 days🔥”

Nuggets of Wisdom for Aspiring Journalers

When asked for advice on building a journaling habit, Dave offers a valuable tip: “Don’t force yourself into a particular style of journaling. Just write! Write about what you like and what you know. Even if it might seem silly or unimportant, write about it anyway, because this is your life!”

He emphasizes the significance of capturing even seemingly trivial or unimportant moments because they are part of one’s unique life story. Dave encourages others to embrace their emotions, allowing joy, anger, sorrow, and confusion to drive their writing, creating a truly authentic and memorable narrative.

“Don’t force yourself into a particular style of journaling. Just write! Write about what you like and what you know. Even if it might seem silly or unimportant, write about it anyway, because this is your life!”

Lessons Gained Through Journaling

Over the course of five decades, Dave has learned valuable lessons through his journaling practice.

“Here’s the most important thing that I have learned from keeping journals over the years. Not everything that you think is right is right. Coming back to decisions that you write about days, weeks, months or decades later helps you immensely to realize this. You see your thought processes leading up to decisions, how it turned out and whether those decisions held up years later. This type of retrospective realization is invaluable and as a we all know, the human memory is not necessarily going to keep all the details later in life.

I’ve also learned that you love what you love. Nothing is wrong with that. And nobody is going to change that. So why not celebrate it?”

The Power of the Day One App

For Dave, the Day One app has become an invaluable tool for journaling.

“Most importantly, Day One is the epitome of convenience. Gone are the days when you have to sit down and put pen to paper to make a journal entry. Unless you want to do that, of course. I thrive on the convenience of making journal entries on my iPhone, which I always have with me. Using my iPhone as a camera, video recording device and Internet connection brings all of the important things together for me to use as the basis of journal entries. Also being able to use the Day One app with cloud storage on my iPhone, iPad and Mac helps keeps the process seamless no matter what technology I use to make entries.

“Scanning text into entries has been invaluable for my retrospective entries project.

“Being able to incorporate images and video helps me further embellish my entries.

“IFTTT capability lets me bring in links to YouTube and (sometimes) music streaming services.”

The Amazing Story a Journal Tells

In the world of journaling, every journey is unique, and David Lisa’s journaling practice exemplifies the depth and richness this art form can bring to one’s life. Through his words and experiences, Dave reminds us to embrace our passions, celebrate our unique selves, and record the moments that shape us.

As he aptly puts it, “Write about what you love and what you know about. Always be truthful and don’t sugarcoat things. Don’t be afraid to let it all hang out. Let your writing reflect your joy, your anger, your sorrow and your confusion. Let your emotion drive your writing. These are the things that are important to you and are the things make you completely unique. Years from now, what an amazing story this will be to look back on and re-read!”

So, take a cue from Dave and embark on your own journaling adventure, capturing the moments that shape your life and celebrating how far you’ve come.

For Katie Gish, a graphic designer residing in the Southwest USA, journaling has become an essential means of preserving memories and unleashing her creativity. Through her unique approach to journaling, Katie demonstrates how this practice can be a delightful blend of documenting everyday life, reminiscing on funny moments, and embracing the sentimental. In this interview, we dive into Katie’s journaling journey, uncovering her tips, favorite features of the Day One app, and the joy she finds in capturing her everyday life.

Remembering Moments (and Pizza Orders)

For Katie, journaling allows her to cherish precious moments with her family and friends. She shares, “It also helps me remember that when I order pizza for a family get-together, that 13 pizzas is 8 pizzas too many.”

Journaling serves as a reminder of the joyous times shared with loved ones, as well as the humorous anecdotes that make life memorable.

“To remember moments with my family and friends. Also to remember that when I order pizza for a family get-together that 13 pizzas is 8 pizzas too many.”

Topics that Fill the Pages

When it comes to the content of her journal, Katie’s entries span a wide range of subjects. She explains, “People, events, vacations, and crud I’m supposed to remember. Like ‘Hey look! We painted our house. Next time the kids throw mud balls at it, touch it up with SW 7044. #houseprojects.'” Katie’s journaling encompasses everything from personal experiences to practical reminders, ensuring that no meaningful detail escapes her attention.

Timing is Everything

The frequency of journaling varies for Katie depending on the circumstances. During vacations, she makes it a point to journal nightly. However, for daily life, Katie admits that her journaling practice is more sporadic, often finding time after her kids go to bed. She humorously adds, “When Binge-Watching ‘The Mandalorian’: There is no time for journaling.”

Katie’s Tip for Building a Journaling Habit: Use Photos as Triggers

Katie’s advice for those looking to build a journaling habit is simple yet effective: take more photos. She suggests, “For me, what worked was to take more photos. When I go back through my photos, I have a visual reminder that I want to journal about this or that.”

By utilizing visual cues, Katie ensures that her journal entries capture the moments that matter most to her, making the process more engaging and enjoyable.

“For me, what worked was to take more photos. When I go back through my photos, I have a visual reminder that I want to journal about this or that.”

Journaling as Alternative to Social Media

Journaling has become an avenue for authentic self-expression, free from external validation or judgment. Through her journaling journey, Katie has gained insightful lessons about what truly matters to her. She shares, “Documenting what is important for the people I actually care about. Journaling really started taking off for me when I decided to stop posting on social media. It was a refreshing change. No one can ‘thumbs down’ a journal entry. 😉”

Katie’s Unofficial Templates and Funny Entries

While Katie doesn’t utilize the provided templates in the Day One app, she has developed her own unofficial templates to capture specific aspects of her life. Embracing the lighter side of life, Katie combines humor and real-world events to create a comprehensive snapshot of her journaling journey.

She shares a few examples:

  • Overall Thoughts: “If I go on a trip/host a party/complete a big project, I make notes of overall thoughts, what worked, and what I’d do differently next time. It’s such a huge help for when I or a friend plan something similar.”
  • Funny Moments: “An entry of all the funny moments from a trip. I share them with my travel buddies when they show up in my “On This Day” the following year.”
  • Current Event Memes: “Sometimes I document what’s going on in the world through memes I’ve come across. It’s basically what got me through the pandemic.”
Katie’s Current Event Memes journal
  • Calendar: “I also take a photo on the last day of the month of my family’s white board calendar from that month. Sometimes it’s cool to remember a glimpse of my life through my schedule.”
  • Profile Photo: “Every time I take a new profile photo, I make a journal entry of it. That way when I die, they’ll have a decent photo for my obituary.”
  • “Practical Jokes on the neighbor” is a tag I like to use. Thanks to Day One, I have a documented list of who is the better jokester. (It’s me.)”
  • Sentimental Garbage: “Family members give me gifts that they want me to love and cherish forever, but I can only keep so many masking tape creations and spider-man drawings. So I snap a photo, journal about it, and then bury it deep in the garbage can.”

Katie’s Favorite Day One Features

When it comes to the tools that aid her journaling practice, Katie highlights some of the key features of the Day One app:

  • On This Day – “Hands down number one reason just recommend Day One. It’s part of our family’s morning ritual to read the On This Days together.”
  • Tags – “I fostered a little boy for a while and gave his mom a printed book of all the journal entries that I tagged him in. Day One makes it easy to turn your journal entries into such a personal gift.”
  • Search – It’s like Google for my past life. “What number of hair-clipper does our son like?” Search: haircut he didn’t hate. “What restaurant in Vegas gave us food poisoning?” Search: Puked 13 times today
  • Metadata from Photos – “I backfilled my journal clear back to when my son was born 3 years before I started journaling consistently. I just went through my photos app on my computer and created entries for my favorite photos and videos. Since it posts based on the metadata, I know the dates are correct.”

Celebrating Life’s Quirks and Stories Through Journaling

To conclude our conversation, we asked Katie what she would like to share about herself or her journal. With a touch of self-deprecating humor, she remarks, “If my journal could talk, it’d say: ‘She’s not actually as lame as she appears.'”

Katie’s journal is a testament to the multifaceted aspects of her life, filled with love, laughter, and the occasional practical joke. Through journaling, she has found a unique voice that captures the essence of who she truly is.

So, take a cue from Katie and embark on your own journaling adventure, capturing the moments that shape your life and celebrating how far you’ve come.
