That\u2019s why Day One uses <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/day-one-sync\/end-to-end-encryption-faq\/\">end-to-end encryption<\/a><\/strong> to protect your entries with an encryption key that only you can access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-encryption-key\">What Is an Encryption Key?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <strong>encryption key<\/strong> is a long string of letters and numbers that acts like a super-secure password. It\u2019s automatically generated when you enable end-to-end encryption in Day One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s <strong>unique to you<\/strong>, and Day One does <strong>not<\/strong> store a copy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you lose access to this key, <strong>you will not be able to read your encrypted entries<\/strong>, even if they\u2019re still stored on your device or in the cloud.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should never share your encryption key with anyone else, even when using shared journals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f <strong>Warning:<\/strong> If your encryption key is lost and you don&#8217;t have a backup, Day One <strong>cannot<\/strong> recover your encrypted content. It will be permanently unreadable.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-view-and-backup-your-encryption-key\">How to View and Backup Your Encryption Key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these steps to view your encryption key and see the backup options available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ios-ipados\">iOS \/ iPadOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Day One<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap your account icon in the top right to open the app settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap <strong>Sync<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap <strong>View Encryption Key<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-android\">Android<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Day One<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap your account icon in the top right to open the app settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap <strong>Sync<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap <strong>Encryption Key<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-macos\">macOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Day One<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Sync<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Advanced<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>View Encryption Key<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-web-app-windows-app\">Web App \/ Windows App<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to https:\/\/dayone.me\/settings in a web browser.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under <strong>Encryption Key<\/strong> click <strong>View\/Back up<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-practices-for-backing-up-your-key\">Best Practices for Backing Up Your Key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the platform you&#8217;re using, when you view your encryption key, you&#8217;ll see some\/all of the following backup options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Backup to iCloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backup to Google Drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manual backup options:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Send to Email Address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save\/Download PDF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Print<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Day One cannot recover your encrypted data without your key, <strong>we strongly recommend backing it up<\/strong> right away using at least one online and one offline backup method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-online-backup-your-key-to-icloud-or-google-drive\">Online &#8211; Backup your key to iCloud or Google Drive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Backing up your encryption key to either iCloud or Google Drive (or both!) is recommended for convenience as in future you&#8217;ll only need to sign into your Apple\/Google account to automatically access your key without having to type it in, scan the QR code, or copy\/paste it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that although your key is securely stored in your Apple\/Google account, it can only be accessed via the Day One apps &#8211; there isn&#8217;t a way to view your encryption key directly in iCloud\/Drive using this method. For that reason, we also recommend using an offline method to backup your key manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-offline-backup-your-key-manually\">Offline &#8211; Backup your key manually<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the online backup methods can be very convenient, they rely on your continued access to your Apple\/Google accounts, so it&#8217;s strongly recommended to have your key backed up manually too, so you&#8217;ll still have access to it should you ever find yourself unable to access your Apple\/Google accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downloading a PDF of your key is a good first step, so that you can view the key itself, as well as the QR code, which you can scan with an iOS\/Android device to add your key to Day One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can then also store the PDF in multiple locations, such as an encrypted external drive, or a password manager like 1Password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, it&#8217;s also a good idea to print out the PDF and store it in a safe place, so that you&#8217;ll always have a hard copy to refer to if you ever need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-if-i-lose-my-encryption-key\">What Happens If I Lose My Encryption Key?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you lose your encryption key and no longer have access to any trusted device where Day One is installed, <strong>you will permanently lose access to your encrypted journal entries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your data is still there \u2014 it just can&#8217;t be decrypted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is <strong>no way<\/strong> for Day One to recover the key or the content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you can\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/day-one-sync\/finding-a-lost-encryption-key\/\">find it on an existing device<\/a>, you can contact our support team and provide us with your <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/settings\/day-one-user-id\/\">user ID<\/a> so that we can check whether you have previously saved your key and point you in the right direction to find it. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note that you can still use Day One to write new content, but you&#8217;ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/troubleshooting\/getting-a-new-encryption-key\/\">create a new account and a new encryption key<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f <strong>Important:<\/strong> We can&#8217;t stress this enough \u2014 make sure your encryption key is <strong>backed up safely<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-still-need-help\">Still Need Help?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need help accessing your encryption key or have questions about your specific situation, Please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/contact\">https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/contact<\/a> to contact our support team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-next-steps\">Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Back up your encryption key today using at least one online and one offline backup method.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Store your key offline in a secure place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share this guide with friends or family who use Day One.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your journal is personal, and we believe it should stay that way.
