{"id":120854,"date":"2025-07-10T07:24:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/?post_type=help_guides&#038;p=120854"},"modified":"2025-07-10T07:24:25","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:24:25","slug":"menu-bar-quick-entry","status":"publish","type":"help_guides","link":"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/day-one-for-mac\/menu-bar-quick-entry\/","title":{"rendered":"Menu Bar Quick Entry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Day One for Mac<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Menu Bar Quick Entry in macOS is designed to be a convenient way to quickly jot down thoughts without having to open the whole app, particularly when used in tandem with periodic <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/tips-and-tutorials\/reminders\/\">reminders<\/a> during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to set the Day One menu bar quick entry&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open Day One > Settings > General<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable the first option called Show Menu Bar Entry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pop-up will ask you to confirm the change \u2014 click <strong>Show Day One in Menu Bar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Settings > Reminders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the check box next to \u201cEnable Reminders.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using the Quick Entry Window<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the menu bar quick entry is open, a small rectangular window appears, allowing you to type your new entry. The journal where this entry will be saved is shown in the <strong>bottom-left corner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>top-left corner<\/strong>, the <strong>X icon<\/strong> lets you close the window. You can also simply click outside the quick entry window to close it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>top-right corner<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find a three-dot menu with the following options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enable reminders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open Day One<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preferences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quit Day One\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to this menu, the icon with two overlapping rectangles (also called the <em>Open in App<\/em> icon) opens the current entry in the full Day One app. This allows you to continue editing or formatting it using all available tools (like media, templates, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have more than one journal, you can choose which one to use by clicking the dropdown in the <strong>bottom-left corner<\/strong>. A <strong>tag icon<\/strong> next to it allows you to add tags to your quick entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the <strong>bottom-right corner<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll see two buttons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Open<\/strong> \u2013 opens the full Day One app with the entry ready to continue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Save<\/strong> \u2013 saves the quick entry without opening the main app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Remove the Menu Bar Quick Entry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you enable the Day One menu bar quick entry, it will launch at startup and will be available even when the Day One macOS app is closed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To close it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click the <strong>three-dot menu<\/strong> in the top-right corner of the quick entry window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Quit Day One<\/strong>*.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Note: Quitting from the menu bar only closes the quick entry; it does not quit the full Day One app.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To fully disable the menu bar quick entry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Day One > Settings > General<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toggle off <strong>Show Menu Bar Entry<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Sync your Menu Bar Quick Entries&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Menu Bar Quick Entry is a handy tool for capturing thoughts quickly without needing to open the full app, but the sync process doesn&#8217;t fully complete until the main Day One application is launched.
