Record audio in Day One. This is a Premium feature. Users can record up to 3 hours<\/strong> per recording (without transcription) and have up to 30 recordings in a single entry. Audio is recorded in .m4a file format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transcription to text is available in our iOS app and can be enabled in Day One > Settings > Advanced > Transcribe to Text<\/em>. Audio recordings can be transcribed for up to 10 minutes<\/strong>, and an internet connection is required for transcription. Day one will use the device language you have set for your transcription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iOS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recording<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tap the + icon on the List to start a new entry. Then tap the Audio icon to begin recording. Long press on the microphone icon to choose between a 3-hour recording or a 10-minute recording that is transcribed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will see the time remaining for the recording at the top left. Tap the red Stop icon at the top right when finished recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an existing entry, tap the \ud83d\udcce (paper clip) icon above the keyboard and tap the microphone to start recording. Tap File for the option to view audio recordings in the Files app (an existing audio entry, .m4a only).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audio recording is now available on Apple Watch beginning in our 3.2 update for iOS. Transcription with Audio Recording is not currently available via Apple Watch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Playback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In an existing entry with audio, tap the audio icon to begin playback. You can scrub forward or backward on the audio timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transcription<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This feature is available in our iOS app only. Transcribing your audio to text is limited to 10 minutes. The default can be enabled\/disabled in Day One > Settings > Advanced > Transcribe to Text<\/em>. Transcription is only available for audio recorded in Day One; imported audio files cannot be transcribed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind that the keyboard language will dictate the language that is transcribed. So if your keyboard is set to English, but you’re speaking French, then transcription will try to transcribe English. Make sure your keyboard reflects the language you are speaking for transcription to work properly. Day One prioritizes the keyboard language for transcription and will fall back to the device language if it can’t determine the language from the keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importing audio from other sources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When editing an entry you can add an audio file by taping the Paper Clip icon> More> File<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also import audio from other locations by using the share extension to Day One from that other source. For example, if you have audio in the Voice Memos app, you can share it to Day One. Open Voice Memos > choose a recording > tap the More (\u2022\u2022\u2022) button at the bottom left > Share<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose Day One <\/em>in the share extension ><\/em> include any text or adjust the journal and add tags if desired > <\/em>Tap Save. <\/em>The supported audio format<\/span>s are .m4a and .mp3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exporting audio from Day One<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tap the More icon (\u2022\u2022\u2022) on the audio file and choose to Share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing the language<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To change the language for audio transcription in Day One on iOS, first set your keyboard to the language you want to transcribe in. Then, make sure your device’s language is also set to the same language. As mentioned above, Day One prioritizes the keyboard language for transcription and will fall back to the device language if it can’t determine the language from the keyboard. For best results, both the keyboard and device language should be set to the language you want to transcribe. Here are the steps to change your device language:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open the Settings<\/strong> app on your iOS device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Tap General<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Tap Language & Region<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Tap Add Language<\/strong> in the Preferred Language<\/strong> section<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Add your chosen language<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Android<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Tap the + icon to start a new entry. Then tap the paper clip icon > Audio. Tap record when you are ready to record the audio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To delete a recording after adding it in the Android app, use your backspace key to remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    macOS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Audio recording is not currently available for Day One on macOS, but audio files may be added to entries. You can do this by drag and drop or by adding files from Finder in a Day One entry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Web \/ Windows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Audio recording is not currently available for Day One on Web or Windows app, but supported audio files (.mp4<\/code>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>.m4a<\/code>) may be added to entries. You can do this by drag and drop or by adding files using the paper clip icon in a Day One entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
