It seems like everyone\u2019s talking about it, yet there\u2019s this foggy understanding of what the practice actually entails. Are we talking about scribbling away in a notebook that\u2019s neatly displayed on an elegant desk, lit by a flickering candle? Or is journaling reserved for when we hit the metaphorical wall and are left questioning life?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, both examples\u2014and many others\u2014can be described as journaling. What is rarely discussed or understood is the practice <em>behind<\/em> journaling. When you understand the practice, a whole other world of use cases opens up, many of which have stood the test of time and can be used by anyone, in any situation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-practice-behind-journaling\">The Practice Behind Journaling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what <em>is<\/em> the practice behind journaling? <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/blog\/self-reflection\/\">Self-Reflection<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/blog\/how-to-start-journaling\/\">journaling<\/a> is:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cA record of experiences, ideas, or reflections kept regularly<br>for private use\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Our friends from Merriam-Webster provided a nice surface-level depiction of the practice, but if we dive past the surface (also something journaling helps us do) the practice itself promotes <em>many<\/em> ways to self-reflect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is, journaling can be as simple as capturing a moment in time through a photo or arriving at a clear decision made possible by asking intentional questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-journal-prompts-for-self-reflection\">Journal Prompts for Self-Reflection<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f1f4f6;font-size:17px\">\u201cThe truth is, journaling can be as simple as capturing a moment in time through a photo or arriving at a clear decision made possible by asking intentional questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to questions, there\u2019s a difference between casual banter with a friend around a question like, \u201cWhere would you like to live?\u201d versus taking the time to <em>reflect<\/em> on a series of journal prompts. <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/blog\/self-reflection\/\">Self-reflection journal prompts<\/a> dig deeper, such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is most important to me about where I live?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which city supports the life I\u2019m creating?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What location feels most aligned to me?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong with banter between friends as it often leads to insights you may not have reached on your own. But, I invite you to take your journaling practice one step further by reflecting on a series of intentional self-reflection journaling prompts. You will reach deeper insights to help make clear, smart and aligned decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can save tremendous time, resources and mental capacity when taking a moment to pause and journal to a clear decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: Think of the most significant moments in your life and reflect on how you arrived at those decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How did I make those decisions?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What went well?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would I have changed?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e8f5ff\"><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> You can create a personalized <a href=\"https:\/\/dayoneapp.com\/guides\/tips-and-tutorials\/templates\/\">journal template<\/a> of prompts in Day One to reflect on when making big decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve moved past the flickering candle scene and have expanded the definition of journaling to include <em>self-reflection<\/em> as the practice of journaling itself, a whole other world of benefits will surface from new ideas to increased mental clarity and the opportunity to design your future life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine if you set out on a walk while listening to your favorite podcast and were able to apply the learnings of that episode to your life, in real-time, through journaling.
